Finally, some of the public firefighters in California are getting lessons from the native and indigenous communities about this practice. This helps reduce the underbrush in our forests and helps reduce the magnitude of some of the wildfires that we've been experiencing. Something that I find interesting while looking at climate change solutions is that there are Native American communities out West who have been doing cultural burnings for centuries. If we start excluding certain groups of people, whether they're disabled, LGBTQ, Black and Brown or native communities, we start excluding those ideas from solutions. What I realized, as we get into a more and more complex society where technology is changing rapidly, is that we need all good ideas at the table. Growing up as a woman in the South I saw a lot of racism and sexism. Public education is not just for K through 12 or college, it's educating our citizens and our residents about how they can make this a more livable country and neighborhood. Education has always been a deep-seated passion of mine. And I'm also very open to learning about other cultures, challenges, and ways that we can solve the challenges we have. I’m sure I’m missing so many! Has there been a common thread that drew you to each of these positions? IM: Your career has been very eventful-you have been Chair of Mecklenburg County Commission, Mayor of Charlotte, an international banker, a diplomat, a professor, and even a math teacher. My awareness of the climate crisis has grown gradually, but I'm certainly feeling the urgency right now. Growing up in the South, I was concerned with the dumping of toxins along our highways in North Carolina which was a big part of the rise of the environmental justice movement in Warren County, which is where my family is from. Knowing that there are so many people who suffer from respiratory and heart illnesses-and climate change is just making it worse. In all my concern about sustainability and the environment and all that I've done in public office, even before I was elected, it all started coming together when I realized one of the biggest things that we worry about when we see the environment suffering is public health. The United Nations have been meeting for 26 years with the Conference of the Parties and it was probably around that time when I realized this is something that we need to pay attention to, because I was a student of international relations and was following what the UN was doing. I started hearing people talking about how native plant species were changing and how the environment and the ecology were changing. I was pretty young at the time, but I've always been an outdoor enthusiast. I remember President Carter talking about climate change in the 70s. IM: Can you share how you learned about climate change and why this is an issue you have devoted much of your time to? This interview was conducted by Ivy Moore (IM), Digital Media and Communications intern at Smart Surfaces Coalition. Over the coming months, we will publish interviews with Coalition Steering Committee members as they talk about their work, our environment and the Smart Surfaces mission. This interview is part of a series of blog posts highlighting prominent members of the Smart Surfaces Coalition team. Sachs shares the writing credits for the B side with "B. This was followed in 1979 by "O Cheryl" with "Ode to England" on the B side, under the name "Manuel and Los Por Favors". Sachs recorded three singles in character as Manuel the first was "Manuel's Good Food Guide" in 1977, in which he appeared, in character, on the cover. In fact there was only one episode of Fawlty Towers – the one with the hamster – in which I had anything much to do." He claimed in 1981 that Manuel was "really a very small part. Sachs is best known for portraying Manuel, the Spanish waiter on the iconic sitcom Fawlty Towers (19), a role for which he was nominated for a BAFTA award (the award went to co-star John Cleese). He then appeared in numerous television series throughout the 1960s, including some appearances in ITC productions such as The Saint (1962) and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969). He made his screen debut in 1959 in the film The Night We Dropped a Clanger. Sachs began in acting with repertory theatre and made his West End debut as Grobchick in the 1958 production of the Whitehall farce Simple Spymen. In the late 1950s, whilst still studying shipping management at college, Sachs worked on radio productions, including Private Dreams and Public Nightmares by Frederick Bradnum, an early experimental programme made by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Lang appeared in one episode of Fawlty Towers, " Basil the Rat", as Mrs. He adopted her two sons from a previous marriage, who became known as John Sachs and William Sachs, and the couple had one daughter, Kate Sachs, in 1961. In 1960, Sachs married the actress, writer, and fashion designer Melody Lang, who took his surname. They settled in north London, and he lived in Kilburn for the rest of his life. The family moved to Britain in 1938 to escape the Nazis. His father was Jewish and his mother was Lutheran, with Austrian ancestry. Sachs was born in Berlin, Germany, the son of Katharina (née Schrott-Fiecht), a librarian, and Hans Emil Sachs, an insurance broker. He was successful well into his eighties, with roles in numerous films such as Quartet, and as Ramsay Clegg in Coronation Street. Sachs had a long career in acting and voice-over work for television, film and radio. He made his name on British television and found his greatest fame for his portrayal of the comical Spanish waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.Recorded in 2012, as part of an audio description of London Zoo for VocalEyesĪndreas Siegfried Sachs (7 April 1930 – 23 November 2016), known professionally as Andrew Sachs, was a German-born British actor and writer. “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. “Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theater is super-exciting,” said John in a statement when the production was first announced back in 2017. For now – casting for the production is yet to be announced. It’s a demanding but much coveted role – and everybody wants to be her – but her personal relationships start to suffer. As with the book, and the hit film which starred Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, the story will again focus on graduate Andy Sachs, who falls head first into the fashion industry when she is hired as the junior assistant to Runway editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly. Now, four years later, all the high drama and high fashion is coming to England’s capital. But, of course, the pandemic arrived with other ideas, and the show was indefinitely delayed. After all, it was announced way back in 2019 that the musical would premiere in Chicago in the summer of 2020, before opening on Broadway. The show is also set to have previews at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth from July 2024.įor fans of the Rocketman, the Anne Hathaway-starring classic film, and the original 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, the production may have felt like it was moving at a glacial pace. Gird your loins and don your cerulean sweaters, because the new production, which is being directed and choreographed by three-time Tony award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), will premiere at London’s Dominion Theatre in October next year. A theme park visit is a timeless way to spend a spring or summer day. You’ll bask in the warming glow of the sun as you cherish time spent with friends and family. You’re exercising a lot, and your body naturally warms due to the activity combined with the sunlight. A refreshing splash of water can change your temperature and your mood. The rejuvenating aspect of such rides explains why they are ubiquitous at theme parks. The log flume is a staple at every self-respecting theme park on the planet. It’s a cheap ride to construct and maintain, and so everybody has one. Timber Mountain Log Ride – Knott’s Berry Farm Which ones are the best, though? Here are my choices for the best nine log flume rides in the world. I only need two rules in place before I start today’s list. One is that I’m only considering theme parks, not water parks. The other is that Wikipedia’s ginormous list of log flumes must include the entry. This rules out a few surprising entries such as Journey to Atlantis and Grizzly River Run. Otherwise, the entrants here are largely similar for the most part. There's only so much that a theme park designer can do to differentiate a boat in water from other rides that have boats in the water. It's especially true since each of these rides must either start at or add enough height to build to a satisfying splash at some point, ordinarily the end, of the journey. Timber Mountain Log Ride embodies all of these elements, which is understandable given its age and status. Built in 1969 and then refurbished in 2013, it's a classic log flume attraction that is more modern thanks to its (relatively) recent makeover. Despite its age, this water ride remains one of the most popular and trafficked rides at Knott's Berry Farm. And it's also an attraction that Walter Knott rode on opening day, giving it particular importance to the devoted fans of this park. One of the quirks of log flume design is that it's remained relatively static for 50 years now. Water rides built during the Nixon administration are just as entertaining as ones that only opened recently. It's barely younger than Timber Mountain Log Ride, opening in 1972. To ride designers, Jet Stream is best known as the first of its kind to employ a turntable-style loading to maximize throughput. For theme park tourists, it demonstrates how little has changed over time. Sure, some log flumes have a shinier coat of paint and better theming. The jostling and sloshing are still the same, though. Additionally, the exit path from the ride may cross over or go near to the flume, such that departing. Water cannons (typically coin-operated by passersby) aimed along the path are sometimes installed alongside the flume. You are probably too young to remember it, but the bicentennial celebration was one of the seminal moments in American history. To increase the probability of being soaked, the flume can be designed to be turbulent, or to run underneath waterfalls. Patriotic boats participated in Operation Sail and took to the harbors of New York City and Boston. At the time the ride opened, it contained the steepest log flume drop in the world, and is still considered one of the steepest in the country today. This log flume pays tribute to the concept.įittingly opened in 1976, the Yankee Clipper instantly became one of the signature attractions at the park. The log boat then descends the 55 degree angled plunge into a large splashdown pool, and then exits the pool turning back into the station. This engagement occurs with a large thud felt by riders and provides a great deal of thrill before the final plummet. Once at the top of the lift hill, as the ride vehicle crests the top it engages with two parallel ride tracks to secure the log to the drop for safety. The filtration pond features a large pipe that is made to appear broken, that constantly flows as it splashes from high pressure as part of the filtration system The log creaks its way up the belt driven wooden lift hill. Riders then exit the tunnels and are given a view of the large lift hill, situated farther below ground level at the base of the filtration and water supply pond to provide a greater sense of thrill. The Seabreeze Log Flume contains a 1,200 foot concrete trough that carries riders in fiberglass boat vehicles shaped like logs through various twists and turns, followed by two tunnels and white water rapids. The lagoon, however, remains in the center of the log flume for scenery. The new ride features an entirely different trough layout, major improvements to filtration including an entirely separate filtration pond that utilizes municipal water instead of water from the retention lagoon, and new fiberglass log boat vehicles. In 1984, Seabreeze constructed an all new log flume from the ground up to replace it's former Over The Falls log flume ride. Log Flume is a log flume located at Seabreeze Amusement Park in Rochester, New York, USA. |
